Change in capital allowances

The current system of capital allowances will see significant changes from April 2012, including a reduction in the amount of expenditure on plant & machinery which qualifies for a 100% year one write-off from £100,000 to just £25,000. The changes will have an impact on many businesses, especially those planning to invest substantial amounts in plant and machinery.

The main changes are:

The maximum amount of the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) will be reduced to £25,000 from £100,000, with effect from April 2012.
Where the accounting period spans April 2012, the maximum amount of AIA entitlement is calculated on a pro-rata basis.
For chargeable periods ending on or after 6 April 2012 (1 April 2012 for companies), the main and special rates of Writing Down Allowance (WDA) will be reduced to 18% and 8% from 20% and 10%, respectively
Where the accounting period spans April 2012, ‘hybrid’ rates of WDA will apply

What does this mean for my business?

Business owners who are planning to make significant investments in ‘qualifying’ plant & machinery over the next few months should consider carefully the timing of those investments. In some circumstances it will be beneficial to make qualifying investments before the above changes come into effect, in order to benefit from the rates and allowances that are currently in force.
